Pilates reflections…
Tuesday = recovery day!
I start the day with teaching a pilates class at 10 am - and this morning it was so nice to take the 20 min walk to the gym… in the SUN! Yeah!
How ever - the class were a bit smaller today than it usually is, only nine people, and I could see all my participants very well - and put a lot of focus on each and every one of them.
And honestly, this is how I think pilates classes should be taught - in a smaller group, or even private sessions… to get the mots out of it. (as a participant)
But during class today when I really observed my students - I started to think…and marvel just a bit.
For me it´s natural that if you´re practicing something you want to become better at it: you want to improve, and you want results.
Even though it might be very different kinds of result or goals to aim for from person to person, and in different time frames, but still - you want the progression.
And also, if I´m doing my own training - in dance or yoga or something else - I want to learn, and do it right - so I`ll get the benefits from doing it and can advance!
Then it´s very fascinating for me to see grown up people come to class - week after week - and serioulsy - don´t give a damn about my instructions , about their execution, about the technique.. or even less the about the ambition to improve themselves.
Here´s an example of one pilates exercise that I usually do: the role up

It´s pretty advanced, if you choose to do the full sequence - and few people in class can manage to do it properly - but there´s plenty of modified options to do - that helps you build up your strengt, get more flexible, and obviously improve your technique.
I always start from super basic - and then gradually builds it up…
Always: better to compensate the movement - and do a modified version, than to compensate the execution of it and cheat…if you want to progress, so to speak. (and if you want a safe workout)
But still - week after week, there´s participants choosing the most advanced option (even before I showed it - and sometimes I don´t even do that) but totally wrong and totally without control what so ever…
And not at all susceptible to corrections or help.
For me this is a mystery… and my question is: why?
Isn´t that a waste of time if your intention not is to learn?!
Maybe the intention is to just have fun.. and that´s FINE by me - especially when it comes to dance classes.
You don´t have to be a dancer to attend dance classes - especially not dance classes at a gym… as long as you respect the other people in class - and do your best.
But if you´re doing it “just for fun” isn´t it a bigger chance that it´ll be even more fun - if you´re willing to learn as well?!
Well, I guess I´m gonna keep wondering.. or more likely: the oppostite, I´m gonna let that go, and instead focus on my studens that approach my classes with an open mind, open attitude - and DO want progress… any kind of progress!
See you in class!
